Fairhaven Historical Society Inc.

Preserving the History of Fairhaven for Future Generations

The Fairhaven Historical Society is member-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Fairhaven, Massachusetts for future generations. The Society operates the Museum of Fairhaven History, located in the Academy Building at 141 Main Street, to showcase a collection of Fairhaven art, artifacts, and other historical items. The museum is open year-round. The Society also offers an annual $1000 Scholarship to a Fairhaven resident high school senior interested in the study of history. 

The Fairhaven Historical Society’s activities serve to supplement the work of the Fairhaven Office of Tourism and the Town of Fairhaven Historical Commission.

“To promote the educational, cultural and civic welfare of the Town of Fairhaven by preserving its historical heritage by the preservation of historical structures and by encouraging renewed interest in Fairhaven history and culture: To promote historical research: To collect educational documents and relics and to provide for their proper custody.” The Fairhaven Historical Society Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization. All donations are tax deductible.

Walking tours of historic Fairhaven are available through the Fairhaven Office of Tourism.

    Take a stroll down memory lane! The Fairhaven Historical Society announces their new exhibit at the Academy Building “Get Your Kicks on Route Six.” This exhibit features images of Fairhaven businesses from the 1950’s to the 1980’s.

“The Old Harris House”

A framed oil on canvas by Lemuel Eldred

Purchased by the Fairhaven Historical Society in 2017 from the collection of the Colonial Club. The painting depicts a Fairhaven Middle Street scene and home that is no longer in existence.

Signed “L. D. Eldred ’96,” the painting was accompanied by a cancelled check for $200 from the Colonial Club payable to Eldred and dated November 3, 1921.
